The Complejo Tango show brings the history of tango to life in five acts. Beginning with the dance’s early days in the late 1800s, following the rise of Carlos Gardel, the emergence of female sensuality in the 60s, and finishing with Astor Piazzolla and Buenos Aires today, the show has it all and still manages to run a quick hour and 15 minutes. With a live orchestra, dancers, crooners, and rounded out by an intimate space, Complejo Tango is a complete dinner and dancing package. The menu includes international and Argentine dishes, including the traditional Independence Day dish, locro. The price for dinner and a show is midrange and includes a good selection of local wines; you can spring for the menu VIP if you want a more exclusive dining experience. If you aren’t satisfied with just watching, Complejo Tango also provides private tango lessons and group classes throughout the afternoon. Get some exercise before dinner and take your date for a spin at the 7:30 class, then grab a refreshing drink as the show begins. Still haven’t gotten enough tango? Consider staying at the Hotel Boutique Complejo Tango, where each of its eight rooms is tango-themed.
We booked a night with Complejo Tango from our B&B because we heard it wasn’t such a tourist trap as some of the larger productions are. We were initially hesitant because of the price, but this one was cheaper than the others and promised a more personal performance (plus a free lesson). Once the night was over we were happy we spent the money.
As the description mentions, they pick you up and drop you off, give you a 1 hour tango lesson, then a decent dinner with wine, and sit you up at a table right in front of the stage. The show consists of a live band playing the tango music, while 3 couples perform the show. There are some singers mixed in between as well. They were all excellent! Very professional. Towards the end the performers come onto the floor and encourage you to dance with them briefly (but don’t worry, it’s more slow dancing than tango and you can easily say no, but why would you?)
Anyways, that show was one of the highlights of our week long vacation in B.A. Highly recommend.
The show was great. Particularly enjoyed the history of tango. The setting was much more intimate than the large scale productions which gave us a ring side seat and better ability to see the intricate footwork. The dinner was mediocre. But overall a great experience.
The venue was great – very intimate, being held at a place with tables right at the stage. The orchestra on the balcony was excellent and the show so enjoyable!!
The dinner was disappointing, but the service was very good.
We enjoyed the tango lesson before dinner – the teacher was very profesional.
I went with my friends… the one dancer took me out to dance!!! i was so sorprised!. My friends were crazy they wanted also to be with the dander..
The dinner was good, and i love the tango lesson, very funny
We began with the 7:30 lesson, taught by Alejandro that night. There were about 40-50 tourists from all over, eager to learn. We had lots of fun, he was an excellent teacher. At the end of the hour, we could all do a few steps, and received personalized diplomas. There is not a bad seat in the dance hall. I had been to a large “Broadway” tango show a couple of years ago, and wanted a more intimate experience – this was it. The dancers were very professional, friendly, and costuming was great. At one point they came out to our tables and pulled a few people out for a quick dance and photo op. The band was excellent. They played a nice variety of tango music. The dinner was just average, and service was friendly, but not fast. None of the tango shows really offer a great meal, but this one was pretty good for the money. The unlimited wine was alright, not notable. We took a taxi, did not use their transportation. Ana at TangoTix was a great help, and I certainly would book with them again. A great evening.
My husband and I really enjoyed the Tango lesson, food (we’re vegetarian and the pumpkin ravioli rocks) and the show! Worth the money and they pick you up and drop you off too.
For a taste of Tango go see this show and do the lesson it’s fun and not at all intimidating. My husband and I did this for New Year’s Eve in Buenos Aires and it will be a New Year’s to remember. Overall the show was good, the music good and the dancing very good. The food was pretty decent for a dinner show, but we also went to Rojo where the food was better, of course you pay more, and you get what you pay for. Don’t hesitate to book Tango Complejo because it’s a lot of fun and it’s in an authentic Argentine building of the early century.
