Ask any Argentine and he will tell you: Astor Piazzolla is a man who took tango to the next level, developing it as a classical music and an art form. At Piazzolla Tango, the old master is honored with dances and music; the theme of the show, Porteño Seasons, is based on a work he composed throughout his life. Of course, Piazzolla is not the only artist on display here. A full orchestra, singers, and a large troop of agile dancers perform music from tango masters across the ages on the medium-sized stage of the Teatro Astor Piazzolla. Part of the General Güemes Gallery, this theater contains space for dining and includes a number of theater boxes in the upper levels. A luxurious interior of red velvet, white walls, and intricate gold molding sets the mood early on, creating a feast for the eyes before dinner even begins. The food is high in quality, though for the money the wine selection is limited, and chocolate lovers will be thrilled with the many chocolate dessert options. You can choose a dinner and show or the VIP Box experience; each is reasonably priced compared to similar tango venues.

Piazzolla Tango is a great show but, I have to say the food is just so-so. My steak was okay compared to what I’ve had in BA, but by husbands empanadas were pretty good. Its quite a bit cheaper so just get the tango show so I would recommend that option. There are lots of good restaurants nearby that you could go to. The building is beautiful, the dancers are beautiful, and overall its actually a really good show. I would recommend it to my friends.

We did the dinner and the show (there is a cheaper option to just to drinks and a show). Dinner included an mid level quality red or white wine, soft drink, or beer. Food choices were steak, pasta, and one or two more options. The steak was pretty good, but not the best I had while in BA. My wife’s pasta was good. Portions were large for both dishes. Service overall was decent, especially considering how busy they were (it was New Year’s Day). Our food came pretty quickly and was hot when it arrived. Refills of drinks (including alcohol) are unlimited. Dinner takes around 1.5 hrs.
The show started promptly at its scheduled time. The live band is excellent! Much better than I expected. And the dancers are very impressive. They are clearly well trained professionals. Wardrobes are attractive and match the performance well. There are two singers, one male and one female. The female is especially good with the male’s performance just average. The show lasts around 1.5 hours and is entertaining throughout the whole time. However, it was a little more singing than I expected…but I guess the dancers need time to change wardrobe and rest a bit. The theater is beautiful…very ornate. Its is held in an old but well renovated space located directly on Calle Florida. The whole evening was fun, impressive, entertaining, and hassle-free so I call it a success. By Argentina standards the price is a little expensive but its a good show, pretty good meal, and an all together relaxing experience.
